Makeup tips for sensitive skin

If you’re someone who has sensitive skin, then you’ll know how difficult and frustrating it can sometimes be to shop for new makeup products that you’ve never used before.

Sensitive skin can become irritated faster than normal, but by treating it well and knowing how to choose the right products, you can achieve a healthy complexion.

What type of sensitive skin do you have?

What exactly is it that you’re sensitive to? Some people might be sensitive to touch and others might be sensitive to certain ingredients.

Those that are sensitive to touch should avoid applying makeup with their fingers and instead use a soft brush made from synthetic materials. Depending on the severity of your sensitivity, you might want to consider having a patch test done with a skincare specialist so you’ll know exactly what ingredients you need to avoid.

Test products before using them

Sensitive skin tends to tolerate a lot fewer products than skin that’s “ordinary”. This means that any new product should first be tested on a small part of your face to determine whether or not you experience any discomfort or reaction. If your skin hasn’t reacted in 24 hours then, praise be, you’ve probably found the right product.

Check the list of ingredients

Choosing makeup for sensitive skin means that you’ll have to be very careful with certain cosmetic ingredients. The product must be both hypoallergenic and dermatologically tested or look out for the phrase ‘nickel tested’ as this means the product has been formulated to minimise the amount of nickel it contains.

Some of the most irritating ingredients to watch out for include:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Oxybenzone
  • Parabens
  • Salicylic acid

Protect your skin

Prepping your sensitive skin for the application of makeup can come with its own set of problems. You need to avoid soap-based products and harsh toners that can cause redness that you’ll ultimately end up covering up by piling on more and more makeup. Once you’ve cleansed your face with a suitable product, apply a cold cloth that will cool the skin before you apply moisturiser. A good quality moisturiser is essential to keep your skin hydrated and avoid any dry skin or flakiness that can cause sensitive skin to suffer.

Take care of your tools

It’s not only your products that you should watch out for. To avoid unwanted reactions and breakouts, you need to make sure that you regularly clean your makeup brushes. These are tools that you’ll be using on a daily basis, and it’s surprising at just how much dirty brushes can affect the way your skin looks and feels. Old makeup and dirt that has been left onto your brushes will clog your pores, leading to blackheads and pimples – two particularly tough issues that no one wants to face, no matter your skin type!

We of course recommend investing in a StylPro device which will spin clean and dry your makeup brushes in seconds which is sure to help you easily keep on top of your cleaning routine!

Give these tips a try and see what difference it makes.
